The TINJ diet

For my personal wellness, I eat a modified version of the TINJ (ancestral village) diet. What is in the TINJ diet? Best to start by going through what is NOT eaten in TINJ.

1> Margarine - I did not see any margarine anywhere in anyone's house anywhere in TINJ during my three weeks there. What can I say other than empty calories.

2> Mayonnaise - I did not see mayonnaise anywhere in anyone's house anywhere in TINJ during my three weeks there. Empty calories have no place in the diet. Also there was no Ranch Dressing, Ceaser Dressing, or Veggie Dip anywhere to be seen, other than the tourist areas being eaten by fat tourists.

3> Milk - I did not see any adults drinking milk other than a small splash in their Turkish Coffee. The only dairy I saw consumed by adults was small amounts of cheese, and butter that was used for baking.

4> Multi-Grain/Whole Grain Bread - I did not see anyone consuming any whole grain bread in TINJ. My aunt has a theory that people who eat whole grain bread with margarine don't eat enough vegetables. End result is they die younger than their relatives who never acquired a taste for rye bread.

5> Highly processed foods - If you showed an adult in TINJ a untoasted Kellogg's Pop Tart, they would think that it is a poorly designed bathroom tile. The only processing of food I saw was for preservation purposes. Nobody ate Lean Cuisine, TV Dinners, Kraft Dinner, Frozen Pizza, Pillsbury, or anything microwaveable...

Now you ask what do the people in TINJ eat?

1> White Albanian Bread, baked fresh every day. They eat thin slices, and since it's so tasty there is no need to add margarine. The closest thing we have in BC to White Albanian Bread is either Italian Bread, or French Bread.

2> Vegetables , vegetables and more vegetables. They fill themselves up with vegetables instead of starches like they do in North America. The vegetables are seasonal, self produced, and they don't give a damn whether they are organic or not.

3> Meat & Fish. There is no such thing as a vegetarian in TINJ. The locals would think they had a lunatic on their hands. The protein sources in order of consumption; lamb, fish, pork, veal, chicken, eggs, and very little beef. The lamb is primarily self produced, the fish is bought fresh at the fisherman's wharf, the pork & veal are purchased, the chicken/eggs are self produced, and the beef is bought at the butchers.

4> Mineral Water - In TINJ they drink tons of the stuff. They mix it at a ratio of two parts mineral water with one part wine or fruit juice. None of the locals drink fruit juice full strength. In addition, the favored soda on a scorching hot day is made by mixing mineral water with a small amount of fruit syrup from Bosnia & Hercegovina.

5> Olives - Lots of preserved olives. In a supermarket in Zadar county as much shelf space is dedicated to olives as is dedicated to salad dressings/pickles in North America.

In addition they consume lots of fresh cookies, fresh cakes, coffee and cigarettes. However I doubt they derive any health benefits from the C foods.

Only in TINJ have I seen men in their 80s capable of harvesting almonds, or Grandmas in their 80s complaining about shoddy Serbian bullets, and trying to out do one another in "If you show me your shrapnel wounds, I'll show you mine".

What helped me change from a Pillsbury Boy look a like to the body I have today.

In order of importance I have ranked the factors and changes that were responsible in my body transformation over the last five years.

1> Fear

As Machiavelli said, "Fear Motivates". Five years ago I weighed 250+ pounds (113 Kilograms), I had a 42" waist (107 centimeters), had high blood pressure (152/92), was undergoing sleep apnea testing, and was developing the first signs of hip and knee problems. I was well on the way to dying of heart disease before I turned 60. Then I visualized a fate far worse than death, being a disabled piggy that had to parasite the "Chi" off of other human beings to live. I swore then that I was not going to let this happen to me.....

2> Diet

I had to learn that just because you can put something in your mouth and it tastes awesome is not a reason to put things in your mouth in the first place. Just because certain items taste like food, are marketed as food, contain healthy wholesome ingredients does not mean that they are "FOOD". I immediately dropped sweetened carbonated beverages from my diet during 2004, and by May of 2005 I had lost 15 pounds and was topping the scales at 235lbs (107 KG) on a 5'11" (180 cm) frame.

During May of 2005, I had purchased a two seat smart fortwo cabriolet, and this was to become my primary form of transportation. Since I had a far smaller automobile, I started shopping at Costco far less frequently. As a substitute for shopping at Costco, I became a daily supermarket perimeter shopper. Instead of loading up on case lots of wholesome ingredient but highly processed foods, I was buying fresh ingredients daily with minimal processing. I started taking CLA (conjugated lineolic acid) as a dietary supplement, and I lost approximately one pound (450 grams) per month for the next 3 years. By June of 2008 I weighed 195lbs (88 Kilos), and my waist was down to 36" (92 cm). The CLA had an effect of lessening my cravings for processed fats, and it seemed to have a prophylactic effect against adipose fat deposits. Funny thing about CLA, it's a TRANS FAT. I add TRANS FATS to my diet, however I control the nature and intake of my TRANS FATS.....

3> Knowledge of my own genetics.

I had made a false assumption that aiming for human performance meant working against my genetics. I had made my best educated guess that I was primarily a Slav (haplogroup R), with a Jewish (haplogroup J) Y Chromosome. What a surprise I received when a DNA test combined with the results of the National Geographic Genome Project told me that my genetic makeup was almost exclusively Hercegovinian Haplogroup I (pure European), and that I was genetically closer to a Viking than to a Slav. I packed my rucksack, traveled to my ancestral stomping ground and closely observed my closest genetic relations in their natural state. I realized that my round head and barrel shaped body was an adaptation to the North American environment.

I saw relatives in their 90s working in the fields and a cousin in his 80s who is one of the agricultural elite, an almond harvester. I have never seen in North America individuals at this level of physical performance before in this age group. What I noticed however was that these relatives of mine had NO SURPLUS BODY FAT, their waists were 30" to 32", and their bellies did not protrude. I saw that there was no reason in the world preventing me from doing what my relatives were able to do except my own misconceptions.

I had a life shattering moment during this trip to Hercegovina when I met my mothers older brother for the first time in my life. Here was a person who was far more similar to me than both of my parents combined. It was as if I was cloned from him except their was one exception. I was 43 years old, in OK shape (waist 36"),while my uncle was 72 years old, in insane shape (32" waist, 6 pack abs and ripped with lean muscle). I saw what version 1.0 of ME looked like, and I instantly had a picture of what version 2.0 of me should look like. I knew at that moment the secret was in my genes, and that I had to allow them to take over from my environment.

4> Doing the exercise and keeping a record of what you do.

I did not join a gym. I did not spend large sums on equipment. I started with a pair of 5lb dumbbells, a pair of 12lb dumbbells and a single 20 lb dumbbell. I did however start with a diary, an Open Office Org. spreadsheet where I recorded; every pound lifted, every sit up performed, every push up and every dip. I kept running daily totals, cumulative exercise performed totals and computed average weekly totals. I developed a reward mechanism whereby I would initially reward myself for every 500 lbs lifted or every 20 body calisthenics performed. Since I was recording everything obsessively, I had a tool that worked with my Obsessive/Compulsive personality type. I turned a supposed disorder into an asset.

After about six months of going at my routine, I had noticed that I was undergoing a fundamental shape change. My body through a mix of diet and exercise was changing from an Endomorph to an Ectomorph. At this time the armchair coaches come out of the woodwork with their fitness pointers. My advice, if you are in better shape than they are, don't listen to them. It is a lot easier to ADVISE than it is to DO.

5> Mandex (high performance wick away spandex clothing).

As your body begins to firm up and the hangs and sags begin to disappear, I bought my first article of Under Armour clothing. A skin tight shinny black spandex sleeveless T-Shirt. This clothing gave me the ability to start performing intense aerobic sets with light dumbbells in my office. This allowed me to dramatically increase the total amount of exercise per day. This also fed a feedback loop as my body got leaner and more defined, I started buying tighter and sluttier Mandex.

When wearing Mandex, every imperfection in the body is visible albeit spandex covered. Their is no better incentive to keep one on the straight and narrow religiously doing their sit-ups than the fear that if you stop doing sit ups, you can no longer wear Mandex.

There you have it, in their order of importance, the five greatest determinants of my success thus far.

Whats keeping me motivated?????? Spandex parties;-)

PETA - What dumb #$%#

What a bunch of dumb conjugation noun in plural form. What happens when people go vegan and dream of copulating with their chickens. From PETA's website.....

Save Seals by Boycotting Canadian Maple Syrup

Every year, the Canadian government allows sealers to beat, skin, and kill hundreds of thousands of baby seals for their fur. Many of these pups have their heads bashed in or are shot before they even get a chance to eat their first solid meal or learn how to swim. So what is an easy step that we can all take to help stop the Canadian seal slaughter?

You can help end Canada's annual war on seals by boycotting a product that is vital to the country's economy: maple syrup. Canada produces approximately 85 percent of the world's maple syrup, with the U.S. as its largest consumer, and by buying this Canadian product, you are supporting Canadian cruelty. By pledging to boycott Canadian maple syrup, you'll be speaking up for baby seals in Canada, for whom life isn't so sweet, and telling Canada that you won't support its product until you can support its practices.

Pledge to boycott Canadian maple syrup until Canada ends the seal slaughter for good. We'll send a copy of your pledge directly to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Canada's Minister of International Trade Stockwell Day so that they can't ignore the international outrage over the Canadian seal slaughter.

To stay up-to-date on all our Canadian maple syrup campaign efforts, please visit our blog, The PETA Files.

I Refuse to Buy Canadian Maple Syrup While Baby Seals Die

I want to help save baby seals and end the Canadian seal slaughter. I pledge to boycott Canadian maple syrup until the seal slaughter ends once and for all and will tell all my friends and family members to do the same.

Signed,
[Your Name]

Dummies don't even know that maple syrup is less significant than seals to the economy.

A Quick Self Test to See if You Are a Sane Individual

We have had several unseasonably warm days in the last week, and one seasonably wet day in the last week. I guess everybody in BC except for David Suzuki is happy.

I developed a simple test to see if you are sane or if you should be committed with David Suzuki and Al Gore to a mental institution. Answer true or false:

1> I wish that the days were cloudier
2> I wish we had more rain
3> I enjoy bundling up in several layers of clothing during late may so as not to get sick
4> I want to avoid the convenience of a private automobile and use transit to lessen my greenhouse emissions.
5> I believe that David Suzuki and Al Gore are right. Warm = Bad, & Cold = Good.

If you answered true to all five of the questions......

Setting Goals...

Upon my return from Croatia & Hercegovina, I had decided to set two fitness goals. The first was to lift 1,000,000 pounds of free dumbbell weight, the second was to be able to do a set of 100 sit ups. The first goal was achieved two weeks ago, 1,000,000 pounds in 34 weeks. The second goal was changed from 100 sit ups to 100 oblique twist sit ups (equivalent to 150-160 regular sit ups). The second enhanced goal was met last week.

I had a mental picture of what the results of achieving the goal would be, a body equivalent to my 72 year old uncle. I focused on the prize, and did it. Along the way I broke many lifetime strength & muscle endurance marks proving to myself that being in the mid 40s was not to late to set lofty goals. I know now for a fact that I am nowhere near what my inherent genetic potential is.

What is a Mario to do in a situation like this?????? Time to set some new goals in the hopes of findinfg out what is my genetic potential???

The two new goals are:

1> To double the intensity of my dumbbell exercises from 34,000 lbs per week to a minimum of 68,000 lbs per week up until I have crossed the 1,000,000 KG threshold (2,202,600 pounds).

2> To be able to do a set of 50 push ups in absolutely PERFECT form.

So far, I have blasted through the 500,000 KG barrier and my workout intensity is substantially higher than my minimum (psycho nonetheless) level. Last week I had my heaviest lift week ever, and this week I am on track to shattering that number again. I have discovered the perfect adversary to compete against........ Myself......

Last summer I answered the question of "Who am I?", a pure blooded Hercegovinian.

This summer I am asking "What on earth is a pure blooded Herecegovinian capable of?". Hopefully measuring my progress at the zero mark, the 454,000 KG mark, the 1,000,000 KG mark, and every point in between will give me an idea of what my fitness trajectory is....

After all in Western Hercegovina, 90+ year old men can mount a woman unassisted.......

Živila slobodna zapadna Hercegovina.......

Something that freaks me out.........

Yesterday, I had to fill the tank in my "smart fortwo diesel" . While at the pump I noticed that diesel was selling for $0.909 per litre while regular was selling for $1.079 per litre. You would think that I would be happy at getting a bargain, but I was sad from being foretold an omen.....

The world economy is still in a state of crisis. While the superficial world of finance and consumption looks like its getting better. The real world of production and distribution is deteriorating. Diesel fuel is the lifeblood of the real economy, and its low price is indicative of low demand. Last year when things looked good, the price differential was the same except that diesel was more expensive.

The only thing that will pull the economy out of this crisis is a resurgence of global trade. People making things and selling things to other people. With Japan's March 2009 exports declining by over 40% from the same period in 2008, it does not appear that this will happen anytime soon. The chances of finding another planet to trade goods and services with are slim. Since this downturn was global in its scope and nature, we will be unable to export our ways to recovery.

When you are at the supermarket, will you buy local or imported? If we have a significant portion of the worlds people switching to local produced food, away from imported food, then we are all screwed. Pol Pot must be laughing in his grave.....

Some strong evidence pointing to Al Gore's hoax

An interesting article from the New York Times. Points to the melting of Alaska's glaciers causing a lowering of the sea level in Alaska.

Anybody who saw Al Gore's propaganda piece "An Inconvenient Truth", and believed his statements would be certain that melting glaciers would cause the sea level to rise.

Here is the link to some "Scientific Evidence"

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/18/science/earth/18juneau.html?em

There is a comfort in mindlessly parroting dogma, while there is some discomfort in analyzing a truth.......

Then again if I was unfortunate enough to be married to Tipper Gore, who knows how loony I or any other sane individual would become.

The 100 Mile Diet, an Interview With Pol Pot

Mister Squishy - One of the newest rages sweeping the nation is the notion of the 100 Mile Diet. This craze has launched a New York Times bestseller book, and lots of local back to the earth movements. What people forget is that there was an attempt on a national level to implement the 100 mile diet that was attempted during 1975 to 1979 in Cambodia. To discuss the 100 Mile Diet, we have none other than Pol Pot, leader of Cambodia from that period who made an epic attempt to bring people to where the food is... Welcome Pol Pot, my apologies "Brother Number One."

Pol Pot - It's great to be back. It is so wonderful to see that my ideas did not fall into disrepute and that some new pioneers are trying to re-implement them...

Mister Squishy - Your great environmental/green experiment resulted in the death of 1/3 of your country's population in three years.

Pol Pot - We were trying to create a new Utopia. Implementing the 100 mile diet requires bringing people to where the food is. It is obvious with some very large population centres that it is impossible to feed the entire urban population with the food that can be produced within 100 miles of them. These areas require depopulation..

Mister Squishy - The goal of the 100 Mile Diet is to "protect the environment" and bring about "food security" and make the world a better place.

Pol Pot - Of course it is. Haven't you read your history Mister Squishy? We made an active effort to improve the environment, and bring about food security. Our accomplishments on the environmental front were outstanding. When we reset the clock to year zero we; depopulated the cities; ripped apart the road systems to plant banana trees where there used to be cement and asphalt; stopped the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides; and we halted all reliance on fossil fuels. Al Gore would have been proud of us...

Mister Squishy - You; moved the population of the cities into the killing fields, destroyed the transport and distribution system that the French put in place to move food efficiently; allowed insects to eat the crops that could have been meant for people; and killed with pick axe blows to the head anyone you deemed to be an undesirable parasite....

Pol Pot - You must understand, when we shift society to an environmentally sustainable basis we need a fair method to allocate the limited amount of food. You must understand that a shift to purely local based agriculture means that there will not be adequate food to go around. The current advocates of the 100 mile diet are the bourgeoisie. However the bourgeoisie do not produce the food, the peasants do. Why should one class that does nothing deprive the class that produces the food of the food that they produce? The answer is simple, place all the people in agricultural communes, and let them decide who gets the food.

Mister Squishy - So those that are deemed parasites get a pick axe in the head...

Pol Pot - Thereby creating organic fertilizer for the productive members of the commune. Remember the less people you have to feed, the further the limited amount of locally produced food can go around....

Lessons I learned during my 1,000,000 pound experiment...

Over the course of the last eight months, I learned a lot about my body and physiology in general. As Aristotle said, authority is based on experience and knowledge, so here I go;

1> You are never too old to make an effort to improve ones physical condition.

An interesting thing has been happening over the last several years. Men and women in their 40s have been breaking athletic human performance records. For most of my life, other than a brief interval in my late teens and early 20s I was OBESE.... I had the mistaken assumption that we were physiologically limited to our peak conditioning we achieved in our 20s through "muscle memory". I thought that through this memory, you could very quickly condition oneself to near you peak that you achieved in your 20s, and thereafter be constrained by diminishing returns with a breaking of the old peak being a near impossibility. If someone told me three years ago that I would have 8-pack abs for my 44th birthday, I would have been interested in acquiring whatever that individual was smoking..............

2> Joining a gym is unnecessary, and actually maybe detrimental to achieving ones fitness goals.

Frank Zane, the former Mr. Universe worked out at home. I myself have never set foot in a gym other than the accounting office for the last 27 years. When you make the decision to get into shape joining a gym can be discouraging. Who wants to go into a place looking like the Pillsbury Boy and be surrounded by perfect bodies? Why waste your money damaging your self-esteem when you have decided to improve ones body?

3> Keep a detailed diary of your workouts

This was the single most important factor in my success. By keeping a detailed track of calisthenics and weight lifted you create the conditions that help you achieve success. The first is a self-policing method, you quickly learn that the only person you are cheating by not being physically active is yourself. Second you create a feedback mechanism where if you feel great you have an objective method of deriving what made you feel so good.

4> Being a smoker is not an excuse to not get in shape

When I visited Croatia, I was concerned about all the young boys in my village that smoked. I asked them how could they ever be successful athletically if they smoked? They responded by rattling of a list of world class Croatian athletes that are chain smokers. This enlightened me, as a I realized that to these young boys, they did not link smoking to inactivity. That is a major mistake many people who are addicted to nicotine make. Being an inactive smoker is going to kill you far sooner than being a physically active smoker. Trying to quit smoking makes the effort I expended turning from the "Pillsbury Boy" to the "buff old guy" look easy.

5> The importance of mental conditioning

Getting into the best physical condition of your life requires breaking through pain and endurance barriers. Do whatever it takes to get your mind primed to push your body past its limits. Deep inside each of our psyches is a primeval source of energy that will take you through your barriers. For exercises that require chest or shoulder strength I would imagine I was in the 16th century and cornered by 1,000 Turks. Each repetition meant one dead Turk, and the prize for killing enough Turks was immortality in the songs of the Gypsies, or getting to die in the arms of a Serbian woman. For arm and back exercises, I would imagine women I know in everyday life in either of a "Helen of Troy" or "Medusa" role. Breaking the barriers would either result in gaining "Helen" as a prize or successfully escaping "Medusa".

Going from 250lbs and a 42" waist to 175lbs and a 32" waist over five years taught me a lot about myself. Now if only my therapist can help me find out what is it about Serbian women that makes me so strongly attracted to them???????

Hitting 1,000,000 lbs of dumbbell lifts.

It's been an amazing exercise.

At the start of my experiment in mid September 2008, I weighed 195lbs. Upon completion of 1,000,000 lbs of dumbbell lifts, I weigh 175lbs. I started with a waist measurement of 36", and now it is 32". One year ago I could do 5 proper form sit ups, now I can do a set of 80 oblique twists.

Statistically over the span of 7 years I went from the bottom quartile in some fitness measurements to the 99th percentile.

Here are my numbers

I can conclude I am very tired.

Thanks to; my Aunt Milka in Tinj for all the dietary words of wisdom; my Uncle Ilija in Hercegovina for showing me my genetic potential; to Gordie for showing me the baddest exercises learned frrom years of observation as a guest of Her Majesty's finest institutions; and all the women who I encounter in my day to day life whom I have visualized as either Medusas, or Helen of Troys to help me break through the pain barriers.
