They are next door neighbours Croatia & Serbia. Their spoken languages are almost indistinguishable. Their cuisines the same.
How does one tell them apart? It's very easy and it's based on attitude.
Ask a Croat how he or she feels and they will point to a moment in history that is real or imagined, when they perceived that things would have been better, and tell you they feel awful as a result.
Ask a Serb how they feel and they will point to a specific moment in history when things were far worse, and feel great as a result that things are not as bad as they used to be.
A Serb generally sees a glass as half full whereas a Croat generally sees the glass as half empty.
JOVAN THE SERB - "I only lost my foot and half of my shin in the industrial accident. 95 years ago, Great-Great-Grandfather lost a leg, and an arm, and all his family when the Austrians burned Belgrade to the ground. Lets have a party"
FRANJO THE CROAT - "Why did I not win the first prize in the lottery? I don't want a new Mercedes I want 1,000,000 Euros. When King Tomislav was on the throne everybody would have received a new Mercedes and 1,000,000 Euros. Damn Serbs I am mad."
