"Just don't fall on your own scissors. That's all we ask, and nothing more is required of you."
A person would think that this request is basic and assumed given. However people do exist where this is too tall an order. Simply not being negligent and not hurting oneself is too much to ask of some people.
One might think there is no problem, if someone wants to fall on their own scissors let them. However when a careless twit falls on his or her own scissors a chain of events is set off if the person doesn't die. It is this chain of events that is the societal cost in caring and healing the fool who refuses to take personal responsibility for oneself.
I now understand and appreciate the spankings I received when I was a child as punishment for getting hurt doing something stupid. Had my mother not taught me the valuable lesson about there being consequences to others of carelessness that only resulted in physical injuries to oneself.
"Just don't fall on your own scissors."
Might have been too tall an order for me.
